Aeration

Tough, warm-season weeds, such as nutsedge and crabgrass, are less active in fall. Warm soil encourages germination, cool fall air stimulates growth, and soil moisture fluctuates less.
Thatch Removal
Thatching removes detrimental thatch accumulation that limits infiltration of water and nutrients and decreases tolerance to daily moisture fluctuation. By clearing away dead and dying grass and weed debris, more light, air and water can reach your lawn.
Top Dressing
Top dressing may be employed to modify soil structure over time, improve drainage characteristics and/or aid in seed germination. Ideally, do it in early fall since you’ll want to give your grass time to grow through 3-4 more mowings before severe cold.
