To minimize maintenance problems, use only species of grass that are appropriate for your location and for the specific conditions within your lawn. Sustainable turfgrass management includes careful consideration of the soil in which turf is growing and seeks to re-introduce and support soil biological diversity which in turn will lead to beautiful, low maintenance turf. Most lawn care maintenance contracts include the following…
Aeration
Aeration will extract cores of soil from the ground. The benefit is improved drainage and decreased soil compaction. The open space also improves root expansion and openings for soil amendments and seed to go without washing away. It dramatically improves oxygen levels and maximizes root growth.
Iron Application
Helps grasses stay deep green during the hot summer months without the increased growth (and subsequent water needs) caused by nitrogen fertilizers. Iron also helps control moss.
Lime Application
The main functions of lime is to neutralize soil acidity, supply nutrients, like calcium, to the soil, and bring micronutrients into a bioavailable form. Most lawn maintenance companies apply this in the late winter to buffer the soil. This helps to release nutrients that are tightly held in the soil and make them easier for plants to use.
Mulch Mowing
Using a mulch mower during the summer months to return grass clippings to the soil encourages microbial breakdown, supplying ¼ of turf’s annual nutrient demand. Mulching mowers work in ways similar to regular mowers with one major difference. Mulching mowers have special blades that cut the grass and then cut the clippings over and over again until they’re very small. Since grass clippings contain between 80 and 90 percent water and the clippings are cut so fine, they dry up very quickly.
Overseeding
The concept of overseeding lawns as part of a regular maintenance has been around for years, but it is still new to many homeowners. This one step will do more to improve the quality of your lawn than almost anything else you can do. Fall is a great time to seed your lawn. Tough, warm-season weeds, such as nutsedge and crabgrass, are less active in fall. Warm soil encourages germination, cool fall air stimulates growth, and soil moisture fluctuates less.
Thatch Removal
Thatching removes detrimental thatch accumulation that limits infiltration of water and nutrients and decreases tolerance to daily moisture fluctuation. By clearing away dead and dying grass and weed debris, more light, air and water can reach your lawn.
Top Dressing
Top dressing may be employed to modify soil structure over time, improve drainage characteristics and/or aid in seed germination. Ideally, do it in early fall since you’ll want to give your grass time to grow through 3-4 more mowings before severe cold.
