There are many common mistakes made when performing do-it-yourself or in-house commercial carpet cleaning. It can take the right equipment and knowledge to deal with reappearing stains and carpet odors in a way that doesn’t ruin your carpet. The following are 5 mistakes that managers and in-house cleaners often make…

Using Too Much Shampoo

Contrary to the belief “more is better,” more carpet cleaning solution does not necessarily contribute to a cleaner carpet. Over-saturating your carpet with a cleaning solution can lead to carpet damage and a buildup of dirt-attracting residue. If you cannot get the excess cleaner out to the carpet you may see things like shrinking, pockets or gaps and ruffles, some tears at seams. Unfortunately, when your carpet begins to shrink, tear, or gap there is no fix.

Getting the Carpet Wet

A big mistake when you are cleaning your own carpets is getting them too wet. You do not want to soak the carpeting. If you use too much water, you risk getting the backing and padding wet. That will make it harder for the carpet to dry properly. The wet padding or backing can cause a musty and moldy odor. Once mold takes hold you need to dispose of the carpeting and properly clean the floors to remove any mold or mildew.

Treating Cleaner Equipment

Renting faulty carpet cleaning equipment can be a problem. Even if you have the best of intentions when renting carpet cleaning equipment, some rental machines tend to do more harm than good. Frequently damaged or not serviced correctly, rental machines can damage your carpets and leave behind excess cleaning solution, resulting in rapid re-soiling and sometimes even mold damage. Testing a small area first will allow you to see how the carpet reacts with the cleaning solutions and machinery. Test behind some furniture. Then if for any reason there is a problem you can exchange the equipment.

Vigorously Scrubbing a Carpet Stain

Another mistake that is often made is scrubbing a stain on your carpet. Vigorously scrubbing your carpet will damage carpet fibers. Not only is vigorous scrubbing an ineffective way to get stains out of the carpet, but doing so will most likely push the stain deeper into the carpet. Scrubbing also damages the carpet fibers by untwisting them and causing them to fray. It is much safer to use a blotting action. When you need to clean a stain take a towel and pat the spill the towel will absorb the liquid, lifting it from your carpeting. If the spill is deep into the carpet you can use a little water to help flush the spill to the surface of the carpeting.

Not Hiring a Professional

Saving money on carpet cleaning may seem like a good idea at the time, but you get what you pay for. Hiring a professional to clean your carpets will ensure proper cleaning. A professional cleaner will stand behind their work and re-clean areas that you are not satisfied with. They also can treat your carpeting in a way to help repel future stains.
